How Governance can Accelerate the Sustainability Journey

Good governance is a vital component of any organisation’s success. The basic tenets of good governance – honesty, accountability, transparency, integrity, effective leadership, efficient performance and ethical decision making, to name a few – play a vital role in managing risk and avoiding undesirable outcomes for businesses.

The importance of governance is now more widely recognised and its application has extended beyond traditional business scenarios into areas that promote better corporate citizenship, such as sustainability. Yet too often governance standards are either not met, or they fall short of what could reasonably be expected to prevent these ‘undesirable outcomes’. The consequences of getting it wrong can be reputationally ruinous, and expensive.
